Spring snowstorm expected across Maine today
A spring snowstorm is expected to affect parts of Maine on Monday. A weak weather system will bring wet snow to central, southwestern, and western areas of the state. The National Weather Service warns this could create dangerous driving conditions. Many regions are likely to see snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches. The western mountains may get the most snow, while Portland and southern coastal areas are predicted to receive less than an inch before rain begins. The snow will be heaviest during the early afternoon and could continue into the evening commute. A winter weather advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for several counties, including Oxford, Franklin, and Cumberland. Additionally, a small craft advisory has been issued for coastal waters due to hazardous conditions for small boats. Several school districts have announced early closures, such as Gorham and Richmond. The University of Southern Maine and other colleges will also close early. The low pressure system is expected to move out Monday night, but another system may bring more snow and rain later in the week. The weather remains unsettled and cooler than usual through next weekend.
