Springfield cuts positions, supplies to balance budget
SPRINGFIELD — City department heads are making cuts to balance the budget for fiscal year 2026. With a budget expected to be just under $1 billion, they are trimming positions and reducing spending on supplies and utilities. A significant portion of this budget, approximately $671 million, is designated for schools. This means the school budget will account for two-thirds of the city’s total spending. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno expressed concerns about the uncertainty surrounding federal funding. He noted that recent changes in funding from President Donald Trump and advisor Elon Musk have created challenges. The city's budget relies on both direct federal funds and money that flows from the state. These federal funds are important for various projects, including road repairs, school budgets, and anti-poverty programs. The uncertain financial landscape makes it difficult for the city to plan effectively.
