Spurs allow Popovich to decide future coaching role
Gregg Popovich, the long-time head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, is recovering from a stroke. The Spurs are allowing him to decide if he wants to return to coaching next season. This decision comes after Popovich has been ruled out for the current season. In his absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson is serving as the interim head coach. Popovich has been with the Spurs since 1996 and has led the team to five NBA championships. He is respected as one of the best coaches in NBA history. Recently, there have been questions about his future, especially after a difficult season where the Spurs finished with a poor record. However, the Spurs secured the top pick in the draft last year, selecting promising player Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs have improved this season, with a record of 28-39 under Johnson. Although they may miss the playoffs, the team is showing signs of potential. Wembanyama is having a strong season, averaging over 24 points per game, and was selected as an All-Star before his injury. Rookie Stephon Castle has also impressed, making him a candidate for Rookie of the Year. With both Wembanyama and Castle signed for the future, the Spurs may be on the verge of a turnaround. While having Popovich back could greatly benefit the team, the decision will be up to him.
