SSA resumes debt collection for SSI recipients nationwide
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has restarted its debt collection program for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients. This move comes after a pause that began in March 2020 due to economic challenges. The program is meant to recover debts by using the Treasury Offset Program (TOP). This system helps collect unpaid debts by deducting money from federal payments such as Social Security. Before the pause, the SSA was able to recover debts that were previously considered uncollectible, showing its importance in maintaining the integrity of the SSI system. The resumption of collections will impact around 800,000 recipients who have a combined debt of about $2.7 billion. These individuals may see reductions in their federal payments to settle their outstanding debts. If you have a debt with a federal or state agency, you will receive a notice explaining the debt and the amount involved. This notice will also indicate that your payments will be reduced to help pay off your debt. If you believe you may owe money but have not received a notice, you can check your status through the SSA or use the Federal Relay Service for assistance. This initiative primarily affects those who have not settled their debts to federal or state agencies. If you are among those impacted, it is important to address any outstanding debts as soon as possible.
