Stalin and Palaniswami clash over murders in Tamil Nadu
On March 20, 2025, the Tamil Nadu Assembly had a tense exchange between Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami. The dispute arose after four murders occurred in the state the day before. During the session, Mr. Palaniswami attempted to address the incidents. However, Speaker Appavu suggested discussing it on another day, leading to frustration among AIADMK members. They accused the Speaker of preventing them from speaking and staged a walkout in protest. Chief Minister Stalin challenged Mr. Palaniswami to stay and listen to his response. He highlighted that while the murders did happen, the government's response was what mattered. Stalin pointed out that social media reports might have exaggerated the situation, despite statistics showing a reduction in crime since his party, the DMK, took office in 2021. Stalin also discussed a specific case involving a known criminal killed in Erode and mentioned how the police responded to the incident. He claimed the police acted to defend themselves during the attack by suspects. The debate reflects ongoing political tensions in Tamil Nadu, with each side presenting differing views on law and order in the state.
