Stanley Tucci shares his hypothyroidism experience and symptoms
Stanley Tucci, the 64-year-old actor, recently discussed his thyroid issues during an appearance on David Tennant’s podcast. After undergoing cancer treatment in 2017, Tucci felt unusually tired while filming in Italy in 2024. Believing something was wrong, he eventually had a blood test that revealed his thyroid was not functioning properly. An underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, which are important for regulating the body's metabolism. Dr. Natasha Fernando, a general practitioner, explained that low thyroid hormone levels can slow down various body functions and lead to unwanted symptoms. The reasons for hypothyroidism can vary. Primary hypothyroidism happens when the thyroid itself is damaged, often due to autoimmune diseases or treatments like radiation. Secondary and tertiary types arise from issues with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus. This condition is more common in women, particularly those between 40 and 50 years old. Other risk factors include age and a family history of thyroid problems. Symptoms may include fatigue, feeling cold, weight gain, brain fog, and low mood. A noticeable sign can be swelling in the thyroid, known as a goitre. To diagnose hypothyroidism, doctors look for physical signs and take a detailed medical history. A blood test is necessary to measure hormone levels, specifically thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4). High TSH and low T4 levels indicate an underactive thyroid. Regular testing may be recommended for those at risk. Treatment typically involves taking levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroid hormone. Doctors will adjust the dosage based on regular blood tests until the right balance is found. Afterward, annual tests are usually sufficient to monitor thyroid health.
