Starling Marte ready for any role this season
Starling Marte, a veteran outfielder for the Mets, is preparing for the upcoming season by staying ready for any outfield opportunities. He played in right field during a recent exhibition game against the Cardinals, marking his first outfield appearance this spring. Last season, Marte struggled with a bone bruise in his right knee. He has reported that his knee feels much better now. On Friday, he played five innings and is expected to have a longer appearance before the team finalizes its roster. Marte is expected to primarily serve as a designated hitter this season. He expressed his desire to play in the outfield, saying he enjoys it and wants to contribute where the team needs him. He might also see some time in left field to provide rest for teammate Brandon Nimmo, although he hasn't played there since 2020. In other team news, pitcher Dedniel Nuñez had a tough outing, allowing two earned runs. Manager Carlos Mendoza indicated Nuñez would pitch again before the team leaves for the season. The Mets are finalizing their rotation, with Tylor Megill set to face the Nationals and Paul Blackburn slated for a minor league game. Megill and Griffin Canning are in the mix for the last rotation spots, while Blackburn is likely to join the bullpen.
