Stellantis offers buyouts to U.S. factory workers
Stellantis has announced a new round of voluntary buyouts for some factory workers in the U.S. This decision comes as the automaker aims to reduce costs after facing challenges in 2024. The buyouts are being offered to workers at facilities in Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois. Stellantis stated that it continues to evaluate its operations to improve efficiency in a changing market. The United Auto Workers (UAW), which represents many Stellantis employees, has not yet responded to this news. The relationship between the union and the company has been strained, especially after the departure of former CEO Carlos Tavares in December 2024. UAW President Shawn Fain has criticized Stellantis for not meeting commitments made in their 2023 agreement. This tension has raised the possibility of a nationwide strike, leading Stellantis to file a lawsuit against the UAW. The search for a new CEO is underway, led by Stellantis Chairman John Elkann. The company's cost-cutting efforts began before Tavares left. In March 2024, Stellantis laid off 400 salaried workers and previously offered buyouts to thousands in 2023. Workers have until May 8 to decide whether to accept the latest buyout offer.
