A man tried to escape police by jumping into the waters of Huntington Harbour on March 21 after crashing a stolen Toyota Prius. The incident began around 10:30 a.m. when police spotted the stolen white Prius on Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach. The stolen Prius was driving alongside another gray Prius. When police attempted to pull the cars over, both drivers did not stop. A chase ensued until the white Prius crashed into a planter on Fifth Street in downtown Huntington Beach. The woman driving it tried to escape, throwing away drugs and a gun before being tackled and arrested by a bystander. Meanwhile, police chased the gray Prius, which also turned out to be stolen. Officers set up a spike strip on Pacific Coast Highway, slowing the vehicle down. The gray Prius then crashed into a building near Sunset Beach. A witness described the scene, saying the man jumped out of the car and ran away before diving into the water to evade capture. Lifeguards and police quickly responded to search for him. Huntington Beach Marine Safety and Orange County Sheriff's deputies helped to arrest the suspect. A gun was later found near the crash site. Both drivers of the Priuses are now in custody.
