Storm Laurence sweeps away couple in southern Spain
A woman is dead, and her husband is missing after a violent storm hit southern Spain. The couple disappeared in Constantina, Andalusia, when their car was swept away by a swollen stream caused by Storm Laurence. According to Juanma Moreno, the leader of the Andalusia region, the vehicle overturned while they were passing one of the streams. Rescuers found the woman's body, but they are still searching for her husband. In response to the severe weather, Seville city hall has ordered the precautionary evacuation of areas near the Guadalquivir River, which is at risk of flooding. Since the beginning of the week, Storm Laurence has impacted much of southern, eastern, and central Spain, leading to alerts for heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous tides. This month’s heavy rainfall is helping to end a four-year drought. Water reserves in the region have risen to 65.8 percent of their capacity, compared to 56.82 percent last year.
