Streak incentives boost employee productivity, study finds
A new study from the University of Alberta suggests that businesses can improve employee productivity by using "streak incentives." These rewards encourage workers to complete tasks consecutively rather than receiving fixed payments for each task. The study, led by marketing professor Katie Mehr, involved over 4,500 participants and found that streak rewards lead to more work completed. For example, participants in one group earned slightly more money for completing tasks in a row, while another group received a consistent payment for each task completed. Despite lower payouts, those with streak incentives performed better. Mehr explains that completing tasks in a streak creates a motivation to continue working. People seem to feel more satisfied and committed when they achieve consecutive goals. This finding challenges the common belief that higher pay always leads to more work. The research shows that streaks can boost productivity without requiring significant extra costs for employers. Mehr believes this behavior is similar to how people are drawn to the thrill of streaks in gambling. This research highlights the potential of streak incentives as a powerful tool to motivate employees.
