Striking workers disrupt Kitchener council meeting, shout "shame."
Striking workers shouted "shame" at regional councillors during a meeting on Wednesday night. This protest took place outside the regional headquarters in Kitchener. The strike began on March 4, and workers claim the region has backed out of a previous offer. The workers were joined by leaders from labor unions, including Laura Walton from the Ontario Federation of Labour. After an information picket, some striking workers entered the council chambers. About an hour into the meeting, tensions rose. Chants of "shame" erupted after one worker addressed the councillors directly. Comments like "You have no integrity" were directed at Regional Chair Karen Redman and other officials. In response, Redman called for a recess. The meeting resumed after 15 minutes. Workers affiliated with CUPE local 1656 have been on strike for nearly three weeks. They are demanding higher wages. The region had previously proposed a contract but is accused of retracting that offer. Negotiations were attempted last weekend, with both sides exchanging proposals. The workers include those from various departments such as water services, airport services, and emergency vehicle maintenance. The region has stated it is willing to negotiate to reach a fair agreement for both the workers and the residents.
