Strong solar storms bring northern lights to southern skies in Europe and the US
A series of strong solar storms has caused the northern lights to be visible farther south than usual, reaching areas like Germany, the UK, New England, and New York City. Reports indicate sightings as far south as New Mexico. The storms are linked to increased solar activity, with the sun currently near its solar maximum. This cycle, which lasts about 11 years, has led to more frequent and vibrant auroras due to favorable conditions between the storm's magnetism and Earth's magnetic field. No significant disruptions to power or communications have been reported. NOAA has issued alerts for geomagnetic storms, but the chances for further displays of the northern lights are low outside Canada and the northern Plains states.
