Student suspended for criticizing Ambedkar University VC's speech
A student at Ambedkar University Delhi has been suspended for criticizing the vice chancellor's speech on Republic Day. The All India Students’ Association (AISA) claims the suspension is unjust and has called for it to be reversed. The university stated that the student, who is in her second year of a Master's program, used "derogative and disrespectful language" against the vice chancellor, Anu Singh Lather. The student, an activist for AISA, faced a one-semester suspension and is not allowed on any campuses. In her January 28 remarks, the student condemned comments made by the vice chancellor, labeling them as casteist and communal. The university said the criticism was shared via email among students under the AISA banner. The university issued a show cause notice to the student on February 17 and arranged a meeting on February 28 with the proctorial board. The university noted that only the student attended this meeting. Her written response was described as "non apologetic." The suspended student claims she is being targeted due to her Muslim identity and headscarf. She is concerned that this suspension could delay her graduation, as her final submissions are due in mid-May. She is demanding that the university lift her suspension. An AUD spokesperson responded, saying the proctorial board operates fairly and consistently when handling disciplinary matters, regardless of a student's background. They emphasized that each case is carefully reviewed to ensure fairness.
