Study finds GLP-1 medications may offer broader health benefits beyond diabetes management
A new study suggests that GLP-1 medications, commonly used for weight loss and diabetes, may also help treat conditions like substance abuse, psychosis, infections, cancer, and dementia. However, the drugs carry risks, particularly related to digestive issues and joint problems. Researchers analyzed records from nearly 2 million diabetes patients, finding that GLP-1 users had lower risks for 42 health outcomes, including liver failure and cardiac arrest, but higher risks for 19 outcomes, such as nausea and kidney stones. The study highlights potential benefits, including reduced risks of dementia and substance use disorders, but emphasizes the need for further research. Most participants were older, white men, limiting the applicability of the findings to broader populations.
