Study finds harmful chemicals in black plastic cookware
A recent study found high levels of flame retardants in black plastic cooking utensils and food containers. Researchers tested 203 items and discovered that 85% contained these harmful chemicals, some of which are banned in the U.S. The study highlights concerns about brominated flame retardants, linked to health issues like cancer and hormone disruption. These chemicals may have originated from recycled electronic waste used in manufacturing these plastic products. Experts suggest being cautious with black plastic items, especially when cooking at high temperatures. They recommend gradually replacing these utensils with safer materials like metal, wood, or ceramic.
