A recent three-year study at Madras Christian College in Chennai identified 23 snake species, up from 19 species in a 1999 study. The research recorded 132 sightings, highlighting the campus as a significant habitat for various snakes. The study focused on both venomous and rare species, including cobras and the Vellore bridal snake. Most sightings occurred during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, with snakes often found in vegetation near logs and trees. Researchers noted that stable vegetation has helped sustain the snake population. They also recorded 11 dead snakes, attributed to roadkill, indicating potential threats to their habitat.
