'Sunny Afternoon' musical premieres at Chicago Shakespeare Theater
A new musical called "Sunny Afternoon" is set to open soon at Chicago Shakespeare Theater. This show tells the story of the British rock band The Kinks and features their famous songs, like "You Really Got Me" and "Lola." It is the first time this musical is being presented in North America. Produced by Arnold Engelman, the show explores the lives of Ray Davies and his bandmates during a vibrant time in music history. Engelman highlights how The Kinks were part of a group of iconic bands from the British Invasion, including The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. He emphasizes the band's unique sound and cultural impact on music. The musical will showcase the early years of The Kinks, capturing their struggles with sudden fame and internal conflicts, particularly between Ray and his brother, Dave. The show is designed to focus on their music and creative process. Actors are rehearsing scenes that reflect dramatic moments from the band’s history. Ray Davies, now 80, contributed to the script of "Sunny Afternoon," along with playwright Joe Penhall. Davies is recognized for writing a diverse range of songs, which defined The Kinks' sound. The show will feature live music, which is crucial to reflect the band’s distinctive style. As it opens in Chicago, there are plans for a possible tour. "Sunny Afternoon" aims to attract both longtime fans of The Kinks and new audiences. The show previews on March 21 and runs through April 27.
