Sunshine Coast announces public transport system 'The Wave.'
The Sunshine Coast will soon have new public transportation options as part of a plan called ‘The Wave.’ This plan includes heavy rail extending from Brisbane and additional rapid bus services. The government aims to connect areas like Maroochydore, Caloundra, and Birtinya. The heavy rail line will reach as far as the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, linking with buses to the Sunshine Coast Airport. Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie mentioned that the project could extend beyond Maroochydore, in preparation for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the transport project was a key reason for joining Brisbane’s Olympic bid. Premier David Crisafulli noted that they listened to the community and avoided limiting rail service to Caloundra, which could worsen traffic problems. The project promises a "long-lasting legacy" for the region, according to Natoli. Additional developments like an athletic village in Maroochydore and upgrades to local sports facilities are also planned. Cost details have not yet been released. Crisafulli stated his government will collaborate with the council and will not seek more federal funding. The federal government previously committed $2.75 billion for the Sunshine Coast Line project. However, their bid for extra funding was declined, as the necessary planning was not adequately completed. The state government is also working on extending the Brisbane Metro and consulting on the final phase of the Gold Coast light rail project.
