Superintendent and two educators arrested for child abuse
A special school board meeting was held in Millsap, Texas, where many parents expressed their anger after the district's superintendent and two educators were arrested. The arrests followed allegations of abuse toward an autistic child in a classroom. Millsap ISD Superintendent Edie Martin, along with Jennifer Dale and Paxton Kendal Bean, was arrested after a video surfaced showing the alleged abuse of a 10-year-old boy named Alex Cornelius. The video, shared by Alex's mother, shows his special education teacher appearing to slap him and another teacher yelling at him. The incident reportedly occurred on February 18, but the school did not inform the family about it until later. In response to these allegations, Millsap ISD placed the involved educators on administrative leave. They have since left the district. Martin faces a felony charge for not reporting the abuse, while Bean and Dale face charges related to the mistreatment and oppression of a child. During the meeting, numerous speakers, including parents and former employees, shared their concerns regarding the treatment of special needs students in the district. One former employee, Jami Riggs, accused Martin of failing to take appropriate action when she reported abuse. Riggs said that parents were not informed of their children's mistreatment, which she described as a betrayal of trust. The school board was unable to make a decision about Martin's employment at the meeting. Another meeting is scheduled for Monday to discuss the situation further.
