Supporters of Imran Khan breach police lockdown in Islamabad demanding his release
Supporters of Imran Khan, the former Pakistani prime minister, broke through a police lockdown in Islamabad on Tuesday, demanding his release. Clashes with police resulted in at least one death and numerous injuries, including to journalists. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi warned that police would respond with live fire if protesters used weapons. Khan has been imprisoned for over a year and faces numerous criminal cases, which his party claims are politically motivated. In response to the protests, authorities have arrested over 4,000 Khan supporters and restricted mobile and internet services in parts of the country. A court has banned rallies in the capital, and travel has been severely disrupted by shipping containers blocking roads.
