Supreme Court grants three months for delimitation in Northeast
The Supreme Court has given the Indian government three months to complete the delimitation process in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam. This follows a request from the government's solicitor general for more time. The court expressed concerns about delays despite a 2020 presidential order allowing the process to proceed. The Centre cited ongoing violence in Manipur as a reason for the delay, while progress has been made in Assam. A petition highlighted the lack of delimitation in these northeastern states since 2002, claiming it violates the right to equality. The Election Commission stated that specific directions from the government are needed to start the process.
