Supreme Court orders MSRTC to pay accident victim Rs 3.84 lakh
The Supreme Court of India has ordered the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to pay Rs 50,000 for not appearing in a case related to a road accident. The ruling was made on March 17 by Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah. The case involves a victim named Madivalappa, who was severely injured in an accident caused by an MSRTC bus in July 2009. At the time of the accident, Madivalappa was 27 years old. He initially sought Rs 23 lakh as compensation from the motor accidents claims tribunal. The tribunal determined Madivalappa's disability to be 20% and awarded him Rs 2.6 lakh. Unsatisfied with this amount, he appealed to the Karnataka High Court, which increased the compensation to Rs 3 lakh in 2020. Later, Madivalappa took his case to the Supreme Court, arguing that the High Court did not sufficiently consider his future earning potential as required by earlier Supreme Court decisions. The Supreme Court agreed with his position and increased the compensation to Rs 3.84 lakh. MSRTC must pay the ordered amount to Madivalappa within 30 days.
