Supreme Court questions Khedkar on civil service exam attempts

The Supreme Court of India has asked Puja Khedkar to explain her multiple attempts at the civil services exam. The court noted that disabled candidates cannot have extra attempts if they have already used their chances as able-bodied applicants. During a hearing, the court gave Khedkar until April 15 to respond to charges brought by the Delhi police. They accuse her of being involved in a larger scam to manipulate the civil services examination system. Justice BV Nagarathna, who is leading the bench, stated that Khedkar must justify why she believes she is entitled to multiple attempts as a disabled candidate. Khedkar has claimed she is still eligible for more attempts under the disability category, as she suffered a vision impairment after her previous attempts. However, the police argue that Khedkar may have worked with others to forge medical documents, allowing her to continue applying for the exam. The police have indicated a deeper conspiracy may exist, involving other individuals. The Additional Solicitor General pointed out that Khedkar's case may involve serious charges, including forgery. Khedkar has previously been selected under the disability quota, despite having exhausted her attempts in 2020. Khedkar’s lawyer defended her, stating that she had to undergo a medical evaluation to qualify as a disabled candidate. The court, while considering the matter, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. Khedkar’s application was canceled by the Union Public Service Commission last year due to allegations of withholding information.
