Surrey plans waterfront district on Fraser River
Surrey city council has decided to look into creating a new waterfront district on the south bank of the Fraser River. This area is currently industrialized, but officials believe it could become a landmark destination, like Granville Island in Vancouver. The feasibility study will explore how to transform South Westminster, which borders the river and the new Pattullo bridge. City councillor Linda Annis emphasized the need for Surrey to have an iconic location, especially as it is the fastest growing city in British Columbia. However, the plan is still in the early stages. It faces challenges because the area involves multiple stakeholders, including private companies and CN Rail. The Vancouver Port Authority also wants to keep the area's industrial land, which complicates the proposal. Experts, like Andy Yan from Simon Fraser University, note that infrastructure in the area may not support higher density housing, which could become costly for the city. Nearby residents at Brownville RV Park have expressed fears about losing affordable housing options. Many are concerned that rising costs will make it harder for families to find places to live. If the feasibility study shows promise, the city plans to hold public hearings for resident feedback. Additionally, technical studies will be done to address transportation and flood risk. The study is expected to be completed by spring 2026. Meanwhile, the council has also approved a plan for the South Westminster area that includes a "transit village" with housing and retail spaces near the Scott Road station.
