Suspect arrested in Garland mother’s shooting death

Garland police have arrested a man in connection with the shooting death of a mother of three. Robert Ray Kelly, 36, turned himself in on Monday. He has been charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The incident occurred early in the morning on January 21. Stephanie Wenneberg, 36, was shot near the Lake Colony Apartment complex in Garland. According to police, Wenneberg and a friend were in a parking lot when Kelly got into an argument with them. Wenneberg's friend had previously dated Kelly. Wenneberg's mother, Nancy Savaterre, said her daughter tried to help calm the situation. Instead, she was shot and later died at a hospital. Savaterre expressed her heartbreak over the loss, describing it as a "knife in your heart." Wenneberg was a devoted mother to three boys and loved being with friends. Her mother believes that Stephanie’s actions were meant to protect her friend. Kelly is currently in jail with bail set at $1.175 million.
