Suspect identified in St. Catharines vehicle theft
Police in St. Catharines are searching for a man connected to a vehicle theft. The incident took place earlier this week when a luxury car was stolen and later involved in a fatal crash. The theft occurred around 9:40 p.m. at a commercial plaza near Scott and Niagara streets. A man had left his black Audi S5 with the keys in the ignition while he went into a nearby store. When he was inside, another man approached the car, threatened the passenger, and took off with the Audi. About 40 minutes later, the stolen vehicle crashed into a grey Chevrolet Malibu. Unfortunately, the driver of the Malibu, a 31-year-old man, later died in the hospital. The driver of the stolen Audi was seen fleeing the scene. On Friday, police identified the suspect as 38-year-old Mathew Morris. He is wanted for robbery, but the charges have not yet been tested in court. The investigation is still ongoing. Police are working with a collision reconstruction unit to gather more evidence. They expect additional charges related to the fatal crash in the future. Authorities encourage anyone with information to reach out or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
