Suvendu Adhikari demands President's Rule in West Bengal
Baruipur experienced significant tension on March 19, 2025, as Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, held a roadshow. The rally aimed to criticize Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee, who represents Baruipur. Adhikari and other BJP MLAs are unhappy with Banerjee over their recent suspension from the Assembly. The situation escalated when Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers also gathered in the area for a meeting. This led to confrontations between BJP and TMC supporters, with TMC members protesting against Adhikari. They displayed black flags and shouted slogans urging him to leave. During the rally, Adhikari called for President’s Rule in West Bengal, claiming it was necessary to hold fair elections. He alleged that his vehicle was attacked and criticized the police for not ensuring safety. Other BJP members reported being blocked from reaching the event. TMC leaders defended their actions, stating that the protest against Adhikari was spontaneous and showed local support for their Speaker. Adhikari and other suspended BJP MLAs had returned to the Assembly after their suspension ended on March 18, but he claimed police blocked his entry earlier on March 19. In related news, the Calcutta High Court approved a BJP rally in Tamluk for March 20 to address an alleged attack on Hindus during the Holi festival.
