Syrian rebels capture Damascus, ending Assad's 24-year rule
Syrian rebels launched a surprise offensive from Idlib on November 27, rapidly advancing toward Damascus. By December 8, they had captured the capital, ending President Bashar al-Assad's 24-year rule. Reports indicate Assad fled the city, with some sources claiming he left the country. The offensive began with rebel groups, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, taking Aleppo on November 30. They then moved south, capturing Hama on December 5 and igniting uprisings in Daraa and Suwayda provinces. On December 7, rebels attacked Damascus, cutting key highways and seizing Palmyra. The fall of Damascus was confirmed on December 8, prompting Israel to deploy troops to its border amid the unrest.
