Taiwan mobilizes troops as Typhoon Krathon approaches southwest coast
Taiwan has mobilized nearly 40,000 troops to assist with rescue efforts as Typhoon Krathon approaches its southwest coast. The storm is expected to bring a significant storm surge and is forecast to make landfall in Kaohsiung on Wednesday morning. Unlike previous typhoons that typically hit the eastern coast, Krathon will strike the flat western plain, affecting densely populated areas. Kaohsiung, home to about 2.7 million people, has declared a holiday and advised residents to stay indoors. The coast guard is searching for 19 sailors who abandoned a cargo ship taking on water. In preparation, many flights have been canceled, and local businesses have closed as residents stock up on supplies.
