Tamil Nadu buses to feature automatic fire suppression systems
Tamil Nadu's State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) is introducing new buses equipped with automatic fire suppression systems. This upgrade is a first for the state's bus fleet. By the end of April, about 50 new buses, including 29 air-conditioned ones, will be on the roads. These buses will have smoke sensors installed above passenger seats, in the driver's cabin, and near the engine. Instead of using water, the buses will use dry chemical powder to put out fires. This powder will be stored in cylinders at the rear of the bus and released automatically when smoke is detected. This new system is important for passenger safety. In past incidents, people have struggled to escape from overturned or burning buses. The fire suppressant will work in two ways: it will fully release in severe cases but only partially in minor ones to save costs. Additionally, the system will help reduce smoking inside buses, as sensors will alert drivers to cigarette smoke. Beyond fire safety, the new buses will have features like rear cameras for better driver visibility and rexine seats for easier cleaning. Recent USB ports on buses have often broken, so the new models will include durable conventional plug points alongside USB ports. Santhapriyan Kamaraj from the TNSTC Enthusiasts group noted that these changes are based on feedback aimed at improving both safety and passenger comfort. The new buses will also have 45 seats, better reading lamps, and panic buttons above all windows for added security.
