Tamil Nadu CM to review guest lecturers' compensation demands
The Tamil Nadu Minister for Higher Education, Govi. Chezhiaan, addressed concerns about guest lecturers' salaries in the Assembly on March 18, 2025. He stated that the Chief Minister will review the demands for higher compensation. Pon. Jayaseelan from the AIADMK raised the issue, highlighting that guest lecturers are currently paid ₹15,000 a month. This is much lower than the ₹57,500 a month recommended by the University Grants Commission (UGC). He noted that while guest lecturers often work for 15 to 20 years, regular staff earn between ₹1 lakh and ₹1.5 lakh. In his response, Minister Chezhiaan pointed out that during the previous AIADMK government, guest lecturers received only a slight pay increase from ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. In contrast, the current DMK government raised their pay from ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 within a year and a half of taking office. Chezhiaan assured that the Chief Minister would consider Jayaseelan's concerns and make a decision regarding the compensation issues for guest lecturers.
