Tamil Nadu demands ID verification for matrimonial sites
The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing is taking action against fraud on matrimonial sites. They are advising these platforms to implement mandatory user ID verification. This move aims to prevent scammers from creating fake profiles. Recently, many fraudsters have exploited matrimonial sites. They make fake profiles to target individuals looking for marriage. The scammers build trust with their victims through chats and then trick them into financial scams. Common scams include fake investment opportunities and requests for money related to imaginary gifts and emergencies. Sandeep Mittal, Additional Director-General of Police (Cyber Crime), has noticed an increase in cases where fraudsters pose as potential partners. They often use WhatsApp calls to bond with victims before convincing them to invest in bogus platforms that look real. These sites display fake success stories and misleading profit figures. As victims invest money, they may receive small returns initially. However, when they attempt to withdraw larger amounts, they find it impossible, and the scammers vanish. Since 2024, there have been 379 complaints about matrimonial scams in Tamil Nadu. To protect individuals, the Cyber Crime Wing has blocked the fake investment websites used in these schemes.
