Tamil Nadu sees 24% drop in road fatalities

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Chennai: Tamil Nadu has seen a significant improvement in road safety. In January 2025, road accident fatalities dropped by 24% compared to the same month last year. The police reported a total of 1,295 deaths from 1,247 accidents this year. Police highway patrol teams played a crucial role. They rescued 865 critically injured individuals, ensuring they got to hospitals quickly. This prompt response during the "golden hour" has been vital in saving lives. Overall, they assisted 2,186 accident victims in the state. To further enhance safety, the police launched a new program. It trains villagers near accident-prone areas as first responders, teaching them life-saving techniques for emergencies. Road rule violations are still a major concern. In January, Tamil Nadu recorded over 1.17 lakh violations, including speeding, running red lights, and using mobile phones while driving. The authorities also noted violations related to helmet and seat belt usage. Police organized more than 4,800 road safety awareness sessions, reaching over 3.4 lakh people, including drivers and students. They recommended the suspension of 31,351 driving licenses for various offenses.
