Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) announced on Sunday that Tamil Nadu will experience light to moderate rainfall over the next two days. This comes after a short dry period. Rain is expected to begin again on March 27 and continue into the next day. Chennai will likely receive some showers on Sunday as well. The rain is caused by a weather pattern known as a north-south trough, which extends from North Interior Karnataka to South Tamil Nadu. The RMC noted that there will not be any major changes in the maximum temperatures until Sunday. However, isolated areas may see a rise in temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius on Monday and Tuesday. Recently, Erode recorded the highest temperature in the state at 38 degrees Celsius. Southern Tamil Nadu has had unseasonal moderate to heavy rainfall, which has helped cool the region. Thoothukudi received 8 cm of rain in just 24 hours, leading to waterlogging and impacting roads and public services like hospitals and police stations. Other regions, including Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli, and Ooty, received varying amounts of rain. For example, Tirunelveli district saw rainfall totals of 15 mm in Moolaikaraipattai and other places ranging between 2 mm to 10 mm. In Kanyakumari, Thiruparappu received 36.8 mm of rain. Overall, Tamil Nadu has experienced 14 percent more rainfall than average during the northeast monsoon, totaling 447 mm as compared to the seasonal norm of 393 mm. Chennai has reported 845 mm, a 16 percent increase, while Coimbatore also saw a significant rise in rainfall. With more rain expected, local authorities advise residents to stay alert and cautious.
