Tanmay Srivastava to debut as IPL umpire 2025
Tanmay Srivastava, a former teammate of Virat Kohli in India’s U19 World Cup-winning team, will make his umpiring debut in the IPL 2025 season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed this decision, with the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) announcing it on social media. Srivastava played a key role in the 2008 U19 World Cup final, scoring 46 runs against South Africa. This was the highest score in India's total of 159 runs. The Indian bowlers then restricted South Africa to just 103 runs, securing a 12-run victory in a rain-shortened match. After retiring from professional cricket nearly five years ago, Srivastava has been officiating at domestic matches. Now, he steps into the IPL as an official umpire. The UPCA expressed their best wishes for his new role, highlighting that a true player continues to contribute to the sport in different ways. Previously, Srivastava also played in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2008 and 2009. He was less successful as a player, scoring only eight runs in seven matches. However, he had a fruitful domestic career, with nearly 5,000 runs in first-class cricket. The IPL 2025 season kicks off on March 22, with Virat Kohli’s team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, facing the reigning champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, in the season opener.
