CLEVELAND – Tanner Bibee, a right-handed pitcher for the Cleveland Guardians, has signed a five-year contract extension. The team announced the news on Saturday. The deal is worth at least $48 million and includes a club option for 2030. Bibee is set to start on Opening Day for the Guardians on Thursday against Kansas City. Last season, he had a record of 12 wins and 8 losses, with a 3.47 ERA. He achieved 12 quality starts in 31 games, totaling 187 strikeouts over 173 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old from California had a solid rookie season in 2023, winning 10 games and finishing second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. He is only the third pitcher for the Guardians since 2000 to win at least 10 games in each of his first two seasons, joining Hall of Famer CC Sabathia and Shane Bieber. Cleveland drafted Bibee in the fifth round of the 2021 amateur draft. This season, he will lead a young pitching rotation as the team prepares to play without Shane Bieber for at least the first half of the year. Bieber is recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
