Tata Motors is set to strengthen its presence in the electric vehicle (EV) market with two new models launching this year. The Harrier.ev will arrive in the first half, while the Sierra.ev is expected in the second half of 2025. The company has become the leader in the electric passenger vehicle (ePV) segment in India. Tata Motors started its EV journey by converting existing models like the Nexon and Tigor into electric versions. The Nexon.ev has emerged as the best-selling passenger EV in the country. It was crucial in establishing Tata’s presence in the market. To make electric vehicles more accessible, Tata introduced the Tiago.ev at a competitive price of ₹7.99 lakh. This helped bring electric mobility to a wider audience. In early 2024, the company launched its first pure electric model, the Punch.ev, based on new architecture designed for electric vehicles. Tata’s upcoming models, the Harrier.ev and Sierra.ev, were showcased at major auto expos. The Curvv.ev SUV Coupe, which offers a range of 400-425 km, addresses concerns about the cost of EVs compared to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. Since entering the EV market in 2020, Tata has seen significant growth, increasing its sales from 1,200 units in FY20 to over 82,000 units in FY24. Currently, more than 200,000 Tata EVs are on the road, collectively traveling over 5 billion kilometers. Sales data indicates a 16% increase in ePV sales this year compared to the previous one. Tata Motors holds a market share of 56% in the ePV segment, followed by JSW MG Motor India with 27%. Recent developments in EV technology, charging infrastructure, and environmental awareness have contributed to significant growth in the industry. Total ePV sales are expected to exceed 20 lakh in FY25, a remarkable rise from just over 1.7 lakh in FY20.
