Tech Neck risk rises among mobile phone users
Lucknow: Experts warn that using mobile phones for over four hours a day can lead to a condition known as Tech Neck. This condition often results in a forward head posture, which can cause pain and other long-term problems. At the Arthroplasty Conclave at King George's Medical University (KGMU), doctors highlighted the growing number of Tech Neck cases. They stressed the importance of exercises and lifestyle changes to protect neck health. Research shared at the conference showed that tilting the head forward by just 15 degrees can add almost 12 kilograms of pressure on the neck. If the head is tilted by 30 degrees, this pressure increases to over 18 kilograms. Such tilting overworks neck muscles and can lead to chronic pain. Prof Shailendra Singh, who is part of KGMU's orthopaedic department, explained that neck muscles are designed to support the head in a neutral position. However, constantly looking down at phones disrupts this balance and increases the risk of pain. Prof Shah Waliullah, a spine surgeon at KGMU, noted a rise in neck issues among young adults due to excessive phone use. To prevent these problems, he recommended maintaining proper posture and doing exercises to strengthen neck and upper back muscles. Prof Ashish Kumar, head of the orthopaedic department, suggested simple exercises to relieve neck tension. These include the Chin Tuck, side neck stretches, and neck rotations. Stretching the muscles around the neck can also help reduce stiffness. Prof Singh emphasized that regularly practicing these exercises, maintaining good posture, and taking frequent breaks from screens are essential for neck health. He encouraged practical lifestyle changes, like holding phones at eye level and using ergonomic furniture.
