Teen arrested for murdering 12-year-old in National City
An 18-year-old man, Carlos Maldonado, was arrested on Thursday for the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy named Elijah Smith. The incident took place at an abandoned house in National City on November 15. Elijah was attending a party at the vacant house when he was shot. Police found five gunshot victims when they arrived at the scene that night. Sadly, Elijah died from his injuries. Four other victims were also under 18 years old. Neighbors had raised concerns about loud music and parties at the abandoned property for years. The party where Elijah was shot had been advertised on social media, despite the house being boarded up and lacking electricity. Maldonado is facing charges of murder and several weapons offenses. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. Elijah's mother expressed her grief, saying it was unfair to lose her son due to gun violence. She emphasized the need for change, urging people to stop resorting to guns in disputes.
