Teen charged with murder in East Oakland shooting
A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the shooting death of 15-year-old Derbing Jose Alvarado Gonzalez in East Oakland. The incident occurred on March 17 while Derbing was walking with friends to soccer practice. The suspect was arrested at his home on Thursday and is being held at Alameda County Juvenile Hall. His identity has not been released due to his age. Along with murder, he faces additional charges, including robbery and discharging a firearm during a violent act. Police recovered the firearm and the suspect's clothing after executing a search warrant. Witnesses reported that Derbing and his friends were approached by the suspect and another youth around 4:15 p.m. on the day of the shooting. The suspect aimed to steal Derbing's backpack. When Derbing refused to comply, he was shot multiple times. He later died in the hospital, but no one else was harmed. Police stated that community cooperation was crucial in identifying the suspect. Homicide Lt. Gloria Beltran noted that when a child is the victim of a crime, it tends to motivate people to come forward with information. Derbing was a sophomore at Cristo Rey DeLa Salle High School. His parents described him as a caring son and a role model for his younger sister. They shared that he loved soccer and had recently started a summer job to support the family. A GoFundMe account created for his family has raised over $94,000.
