TEFAF Maastricht showcases 7,000 years of art

This week, the European Fine Arts Fair, known as TEFAF, is taking place in Maastricht. The fair is featuring 273 galleries showcasing art and artifacts from over 7,000 years of history. The collection includes items like Egyptian jewelry, 15th-century armor, and medieval manuscripts, making it a diverse attraction for art lovers. During the preview days, many wealthy collectors and art experts attended the fair in elegant attire. They mingled in the aisles, taking in the various artworks and discussing their potential purchases. Some unique pieces on display include a bangle by Italian jeweler Buccellati and a metalwork bed by Claude Lalanne. Despite concerns over a slowdown in the luxury market, some galleries reported strong early sales. For example, a dealer from Zebregs & Roell mentioned selling eight significant pieces within hours. TEFAF aims to attract a younger audience by highlighting artworks priced under €20,000. The fair features a wide range of historical works, including affordable antiquities from ancient Rome and Greece. Notably, a 1965 Picasso painting is on the market for $50 million, drawing considerable attention. There are also exhibitions showcasing lesser-known female artists. Some galleries are exploring new themes by mixing different genres of art to inspire collectors. With cross-generational expertise on display, many attendees engaged in discussions about art's appeal. Innovations like virtual reality platforms for art collections are also gaining traction, making art more accessible to newer collectors. TEFAF Maastricht will conclude on March 20.
