Telangana divides Scheduled Castes for 15% reservation
The Telangana Assembly has passed the Scheduled Castes (Rationalisation of Reservations) Bill, which divides Scheduled Castes into three groups for a 15% reservation. This follows a Supreme Court ruling allowing sub-classification within the community. The new structure allocates 1% reservation to the most disadvantaged 15 SC communities, 9% to 18 communities, and 5% to 26 others. This aims to address inequalities and ensure uniform progress among SC groups. A commission led by retired judge Justice Shameem Akther recommended this categorization after studying various factors affecting SC communities. The government has consulted the National Commission for Scheduled Castes before implementing these changes.
