Telangana establishes yarn depots to support weavers
The Telangana government is establishing yarn depots in Sircilla and Vemulawada. This project is backed by a ₹50 crore fund. The Deputy Chief Minister, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, announced this initiative during a budget presentation in the Assembly. This year, ₹37.49 crore has been allocated under a 10% subsidy for yarn, which will help settle payments owed to power loom workers dating back to 2018 to 2022. The handloom sector will receive a total of ₹371 crores in this budget. The government is also running a scheme called “Chenetha Abhaya Hastham” to support handloom and power loom workers in the state. This program includes various initiatives like savings funds and insurance for weavers. Additionally, the government plans to provide two high-quality sarees each year to 64.7 lakh members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The production of these sarees will be done exclusively by local weavers in Telangana.
