Telangana farmer sells world's most expensive mangoes
A farmer in Telangana, Sumanbai Gaikwad, is making waves by selling Miyazaki mangoes, known as the world's most expensive type. They are priced at ₹10,000 each. Sumanbai’s son, Nandkishore, brought the saplings from the Philippines two years ago. Their success at an agriculture fair has drawn much attention. Sumanbai is from Bhosi village in Bhokar taluka. With a basket of the prized mangoes, she attracted many curious onlookers at the fair that opened on March 17. Her journey started when Nandkishore, who was preparing for UPSC exams, had to return home due to lockdowns caused by the pandemic. While studying online, he learned about these luxurious mangoes. Nandkishore researched and found that other farmers in India were already growing Miyazaki mangoes. Seeing a business opportunity, he encouraged his mother to plant ten saplings. He spent around Rs 6,500 on each plant. After two years, the trees produced 11 to 12 mangoes this season. To determine the right price, Nandkishore consulted an experienced farmer and decided on ₹10,000 per mango. The success of Sumanbai's mangoes has inspired other farmers in the area to consider growing them too. Recently, the District Agriculture and Grain Festival 2025 was held in Nanded. The event highlighted sustainable farming and honored innovative farmers for their work. District Collector Rahul Kardile stressed the importance of modern farming techniques for financial growth. Miyazaki mangoes are prized globally for their quality and high nutritional value. They contain vitamins that boost immunity and have a balanced sugar content, making them a healthy choice. Their growing popularity indicates a new and exciting era for agriculture in the region.
