Telangana's energy demand projected to reach 150K MU
A study by the Central Electricity Authority predicts that Telangana's energy demand will reach 150,040 million units (MU) by 2034-35. This is an increase from 96,596 MU in 2025-26. The demand is expected to rise as Hyderabad develops into a data center hub and progresses with several major projects. As of 2022-23, Telangana's per capita power consumption was 2,349 kWh. For the year 2023-24, the energy requirement was 85,644 MU, and by February 2025, 79,067 MU had been supplied without any deficits. To meet future energy needs, several plans are already in motion. The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) will add 800 MW of thermal capacity at Jaipur, Mancherial, and TGENCO will do the same at Ramagundam. The state aims to boost renewable energy generation by 20,000 MW by 2030 and 40,000 MW by 2035. To support this growing renewable energy, the state is exploring energy storage solutions, such as battery systems. TGENCO has started the initial phase by issuing tenders for a large battery energy storage system at Shankarpally. Currently, Telangana has around 19 million electricity connections across various sectors, including domestic, industrial, and agricultural. Urban areas have more domestic and commercial connections, while rural areas rely heavily on agricultural electricity use.
