Electricity demand in Telangana has reached a record high of 17,162 megawatts, according to the state’s Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka. This peak was recorded by Thursday evening and marks the highest demand the state has ever experienced. Vikramarka noted that the rise in demand has been significant, with daily power consumption hitting 331.161 million units. Power was supplied from various sources, including thermal power stations and hydel power stations, which contributed 86.13 million units and 9.867 million units, respectively. For the past month, Telangana's power demand has consistently exceeded 16,000 megawatts. The previous record was 15,623 megawatts set on March 8, 2024. This year, demand has steadily climbed, culminating in the recent peak. To address these rising demands, the state government has implemented several reforms since December 2023. These include expanding power generation capacity and enhancing the transmission and distribution networks to maintain a reliable supply of electricity. The growing power needs are largely driven by increased activity in the industrial, commercial, and IT sectors. Vikramarka emphasized that despite the higher demand, the government has managed to provide uninterrupted power to all consumers, including the agricultural sector. The minister praised the efforts of the staff working in power generation and distribution companies for their commitment to ensuring a steady electricity supply. He encouraged them to keep up their hard work in the future.
