Tender process for new thermal units in Maharashtra advancing
Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) is nearing the end of the tender process for two new thermal units at the Koradi Thermal Power Plant. The project aims to add 1,320 megawatts (MW) of power capacity at a cost of Rs14,337 crore. This expansion is expected to enhance the state's electricity generation capabilities. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the state's energy minister, recently held a meeting to review the project. He emphasized the use of advanced supercritical technology to minimize pollution. Fadnavis instructed officials to ensure that the new power units operate efficiently and produce electricity at lower rates. The chief minister also mentioned using treated sewage water for the plant's operations to prevent water shortages. He highlighted the importance of utilizing coal from Western Coal India to enhance efficiency. Additionally, Fadnavis proposed setting up another power plant near Gare Palma for better coal usage. During the meeting, Mahagenco's chairman, Radhakrishnan B, shared details about the project. He confirmed that the new units will include Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to minimize environmental impact. Radhakrishnan noted that land for the project is already secured, eliminating the need for new acquisitions. The ongoing tender process is expected to wrap up by the end of April. Radhakrishnan mentioned that the project is scheduled for commissioning by November 2029 and promises to be the most environmentally friendly plant in Maharashtra due to its innovative technologies.
