Thai PM calls for ASEAN leadership in resolving Myanmar crisis

Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated that ASEAN must take a leading role in resolving the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. This comes ahead of a summit in Laos, where the conflict will be a key topic. Myanmar has faced turmoil since February 2021, following a military coup that ousted the elected government. The situation has led to widespread protests and armed rebellion, with a significant portion of the population in need of humanitarian aid. ASEAN's previous peace efforts, known as the Five Point Consensus, have seen little success. The military junta has refused to engage in talks, labeling its opponents as terrorists. ASEAN has barred the junta from its summits due to non-compliance with the peace plan.
