Thai workers urged to gain AI and tech skills

Tech leaders in Thailand are encouraging workers and students to embrace the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) by developing relevant skills instead of fearing job loss. David Li, CEO of Huawei Technologies (Thailand), stated that AI is transforming businesses globally. While it automates repetitive tasks, it also creates new jobs that need advanced skills. A recent survey indicates that Thailand will need 500,000 digital professionals by 2030, especially in AI and cloud technology. Huawei has initiated a "20,000 Developers" program to cultivate new talent, including a collaboration with Chulalongkorn University for a course on cloud management and AI development. Li explained that AI complements rather than replaces jobs, highlighting roles such as AI trainers, which need human oversight. Vasupon Thankakan from Microsoft Thailand urged students to master AI tools and critical thinking. He noted that interpersonal skills, such as teamwork and communication, are vital as they cannot be replicated by AI. These abilities will make students more marketable in the changing job landscape. Facebook Thailand's Prae Dumrongmongcolgul echoed this sentiment, advising students to develop skills that enhance AI's capabilities rather than fearing it. She emphasized the need for lifelong learning to keep up with AI advancements. Maneerut Anulomsombut of Sea (Thailand) highlighted the importance of upskilling, especially in AI and data security. The World Economic Forum reports a growing demand for staff with AI and analytical skills across sectors. Vilaiporn Taweelappontong from PwC noted a shift in skills demand, with less focus on traditional programming due to the rise of low-code platforms. Companies are looking for skills that boost productivity and innovation through AI. Pochara Arayakarnkul of Bluebik Group indicated that the demand for technology talent is increasing. As digital transformation accelerates, roles in software development and AI are crucial. He advised students to view AI as a tool that can enhance their career prospects.
